How to program a car to your garage door
Hold the remote an inch from the car's button and press both until the car's light flashes rapidly. Then — and this is the step everybody misses — go and press the learn button on the motor unit and press the car button twice. Without that second half, a rolling-code opener never accepts the car.

Doing it
- Clear the car's buttons first if it is second-hand: hold the two outer buttons until the light flashes.
- Hold the remote one to three inches from the car button and press both together until the car's indicator flashes rapidly.Distance matters more than people expect. If it will not take, try again an inch closer or further.
- Go to the motor unit and press the learn button.
- Within thirty seconds, press the car button twice, or three times on some models.This is the rolling-code handshake. Skipping it is why the car appears to program and then does nothing.
Where it stops being yours
On an opener made before about 1995 there is no rolling code and the second half is unnecessary — but those openers have no safety sensors either, and that is a bigger conversation.
