What it costs

Garage door opener installation cost

Typical

$450 – $1,200

Most jobs land near $700 · opener and fitting

Between $450 and $1,200 fitted, depending almost entirely on which opener. A basic chain drive fitted runs $450 to $800. A wall-mounted wi-fi jackshaft with battery backup runs $650 to $1,200. The fitting itself is a couple of hours either way.

What is in the price

  • The opener, rail and mounting hardware
  • Fitting, wiring to an existing outlet, and setting the travel and force limits
  • Pairing your remotes and keypad
  • Testing the safety reverse

What moves it

Why two quotes differ

FactorWhat it does to the number
Drive typeChain is cheapest and loudest. Belt is quieter and a little more. A wall-mounted jackshaft costs most and frees the ceiling entirely.
Battery backupAdds $110 to $200 and is required on new openers in some states. It is also what gets your car out in a power cut.
Door heightAn eight-foot door needs an extension kit for the rail. A ten-foot door needs a longer rail again.
Electrical workNo outlet near the opener means an electrician, and that is a separate trade and a separate bill.

When not to bother

The point where repairing is the wrong call

An opener over about fifteen years old with a failing board is usually not worth repairing — the parts cost approaches a new unit and the new one has safety features the old one does not.
