Garage door spring replacement cost

Typical

$220 – $500

Most jobs land near $320 · per spring, supplied and fitted

Between $220 and $500 a spring fitted, and most doors have two. Expect $400 to $750 for a pair on a normal double door. A quote much under that usually means a cheap spring; much over it usually means an emergency call-out rate.

Before you price a DIY

Never change your own springs

A torsion spring on a double garage door holds enough stored energy to break an arm, take out teeth, or worse. It is wound under tension with two steel bars, and if one slips it goes at the speed of the thing it was holding up. People are seriously injured doing this every year, and some are killed. There is no YouTube video that makes this safe, and the part costs less than the emergency room.

What is in the price

  • The spring itself, sized to your door's weight and height
  • Winding it to the correct tension and balancing the door
  • New bearings if the old ones are dry
  • Testing the safety reverse afterwards

What moves it

Why two quotes differ

FactorWhat it does to the number
One spring or twoBoth are replaced together even when one has gone — the second is the same age and follows within months. Doing one twice costs more than doing two once.
Standard or high-cycleA standard spring is rated around 10,000 cycles, roughly seven years on a normal house. High-cycle runs 25,000 and adds about a third to the price.
Door weightAn insulated or wood door needs a heavier spring. This is why a quote over the phone is a guess.
When you ringEvenings, weekends and holidays carry a surcharge — often $150.

When not to bother

The point where repairing is the wrong call

If the door is over twenty years old, the panels are rusting and the springs have gone, put the money toward a new door. A new door comes with new springs, so you are not paying twice.
